Bill Clinton and Kosovo

Bill Clinton is considered a national hero in Kosovo for leading the 1999 NATO military intervention against Serbia.

He served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001.

Under the Clinton administration, the United States and its NATO allies launched a campaign of airstrikes against Belgrade in April 1999 (see dedicated article).

The intervention forced the Serbian government to withdraw its troops, laying the groundwork for Kosovo’s future independence.

Kosovo is one of the most pro-American countries in the world; Pristina is home to a boulevard and a statue dedicated to Bill Clinton.

The statue is a bronze sculpture standing approximately 3.5 meters tall, officially unveiled on 1st November 2009, in the presence of the former U.S. president himself.

It depicts Clinton with his arm raised in a wave, holding a folder that bears his name and the date NATO began its bombing campaign against Yugoslav forces (24th March 1999).

Pristina is also home to another monument dedicated to the country’s history: the Newborn Monument.

The Newborn Monument is a typographic installation celebrating Kosovo’s independence; it is repainted every year on 17th February with ever-changing social and political themes.
