The Red Flat – Sofia

“The Red Flat” in Sofia is one of the most immersive attractions in the Bulgarian capital.

It is a house-museum featuring original artifacts that acts as a time machine, allowing visitors to relive the daily life of communist-era Bulgaria in the late 1980s.

The experience recreates the home of a typical—fictional, yet highly authentic—middle-class family of the time: the Petrovs.

An audio guide leads you from room to room, revealing the habits, personal stories, consumer goods, and bureaucratic challenges of the regime.

What makes this place unique is the absence of display cases or barriers; you are free to touch everything. You can open drawers, leaf through old magazines, sit in the retro armchairs in the living room, turn on the vintage Soviet-era television, and rummage through the wardrobe.

The space itself is an authentic apartment located on the third floor of an ordinary residential building in the center of Sofia.

When the elderly owner passed away and the property fell into disuse, the association purchased it—along with all its contents, which had remained virtually frozen in time since the mid-1980s.

Before visiting the apartment, you must first go to the “GIFTED” shop and cultural hub, located at 24 Ivan Denkoglu Street (near Vitosha Boulevard).

Upon purchasing your tickets, you will receive an audio guide, and only then will the staff reveal the exact—and “secret”—location of the building where the apartment is situated.

Please note that the apartment is located on the third floor of a historic building; there is no elevator, and the space is not wheelchair accessible.
