Ferrari Winery – Trento

Ferrari was founded by Giulio Ferrari in 1902 in Trento, at the time part of the County of Tyrol within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

His dream was to recreate a wine capable of competing with the best French Champagnes.

He was the first to realize that the Trentino area was optimal for the development of his dream and was the first to spread Chardonnay in Italy.

At the beginning he began to produce a few selected bottles, with an obsessive cult for quality.

In 1937 Ferrari’s “Italian champagne” was awarded the Diplome de Grand Prix in Paris, and it is now evident to the wine world that a good sparkling wine can also be produced outside the French territories. 

With the beginning of the Second World War, the production of Ferraris, which had just begun to be marketed thanks to the figure of the Trentino merchant Bruno Lunelli, declined. 

With the hope of not losing all the work done, the Ferrari cellar is walled up with all the bottles inside. When the whole of Italy was liberated in 1945, the time came to reopen the cellars as well.

Once a few bottles were opened, it was discovered that after aging the quality of the sparkling wine improved, thus the first Ferrari reserve was born.

In 1952, having no children, Giulio Ferrari looked for a successor to whom he could entrust his dream.

Among the many suitors, he chose Bruno Lunelli, owner of a wine shop in Trento. Thanks to his passion and entrepreneurial talent, Bruno Lunelli is able to increase production without ever compromising on quality.

Today, the third generation of the Lunelli family keeps Giulio Ferrari’s dream alive by making it one of the most important Italian brands.

One of the main characteristics of Ferrari sparkling wine is its production. It is performed according to the classic method, also called the Champenoise method 

The main organoleptic characteristics of the Trentodoc classic method are: 

  • Colour: straw yellow more or less deep
  • Foam: fine and persistent
  • Bouquet: delicate hint of yeast and golden apple; more complex floral bouquet in the Reserves
  • Taste: typical, lively, harmonious, with good body

The four production lines of Ferrari Spumante are: Classic, Maximum, Perlè and Riserve.

Classic line: symbol of the tradition of the House and of the vocation of the mountains of Trentino for the creation of bubbles of great finesse, the line is available in Brut, Rosé and Demi-Sec versions.

Maximum Line: in the Blanc de Blancs, Rosé and Demi-Sec versions, it brings a touch of modernity from aperitif to dessert.

Perlé Line: always a symbol of the House’s elegance, it is now available in 5 versions, from the historic Perlé to zero dosage, up to the three Reserves: White, Black and Rosé.

Riserva: the company’s most prestigious labels that have stood the test of time: from the Ferrari Riserva Lunelli to the myth of the Giulio Ferrari Riserva.

Inside the cellars there are about 24 million bottles that age on their lees, for a period that varies according to the type and product line.
