Mitrovica (Kosovska Mitrovica)

Mitrovica (Kosovska Mitrovica) is one of the most unique cities in the world, physically and culturally divided by the course of the Ibar River.

The difference between South Mitrovica and North Mitrovica is not merely administrative; it represents a genuine boundary between two worlds distinct in language, culture, and everyday atmosphere.

Mitrovica is notorious for being a prime symbol of the ethnic and political divisions in the Balkans. Since 2013, the city has been formally split into two separate municipalities, divided by the Ibar River.

South Mitrovica has an overwhelming Albanian majority. The atmosphere is typical of the rest of Kosovo and Albania. The streets are adorned with Kosovar, Albanian, and American flags, and social life is strongly influenced by Ottoman-style culture and architecture.

Symbol of South Mitrovica is the Isa Beg Mosque, the city’s main mosque and the spiritual heart of the local Albanian community.

Nearby lies the Mitrovica City Museum, housed in the former Yugoslav Army House.

The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections: archaeology, ethnology, local history, and geology.

The bridge over the Ibar River is the primary symbol of ethnic and political division in Kosovo and serves as a veritable border. Until a few years ago, it was blocked by barricades, whereas today it is permanently guarded by KFOR troops (the NATO-led international force).

Since the end of the Kosovo War in 1999, the Ibar bridge has ceased to be a standard piece of road infrastructure and has become a geopolitical symbol. The Serb community erected concrete blocks and barricades on it, effectively restricting it to pedestrian traffic only.

North Mitrovica has an overwhelming Serb majority. The atmosphere reflects that of Serbia and the Orthodox Balkans. The streets are adorned with Serbian flags and murals featuring political themes and Cyrillic script, while the architecture includes monuments linked to Serbian history and the Yugoslav past.

Landmarks of North Mitrovica include the Church of Saint Demetrius (dedicated article), the Monument to Heroic Miners (dedicated article), and the statue of the medieval Serbian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, which dominates the central square and embodies the cultural identity of the Serbian community.
