National Library of Kosovo – Pristina

The “Pjeter Bogdani” National Library of Kosovo is the largest library institution in the country, located in the center of the capital.

Founded in 1944, the building was completed only in 1986, significantly behind schedule and during a particularly difficult period for the economy of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The building is composed of a combination of reinforced concrete cubic blocks topped by 99 domes of various sizes and entirely covered by a metal mesh.

It houses spacious reading rooms, temporary exhibitions, special collections, and a 150-seat amphitheater.

National Library has the important goal of collecting, preserving, and making accessible the nation’s great literary and cultural heritage.

The library houses over 2 million books, including collections of ancient books, precious Arabic texts, and Albanian manuscripts in Latin and Greek.

The building that houses the National Library is one of the most controversial in Kosovo and is a symbol of Yugoslav socialist architecture in the country.
