The Church of Saint Demetrius is one of the main Serbian Orthodox places of worship in Mitrovica and is located in the northern part of the city.
Construction began in 2001 and the church was consecrated in 2005; it was erected on a prominent hill to provide the Serbian community with an easily accessible place of prayer following the division of the city.
The building features a central dome flanked by six smaller domes in the traditional Neo-Byzantine style.
The central dome symbolizes Christ Pantocrator, while the six surrounding smaller domes represent the six days of Creation or—according to other theological interpretations—the Evangelists and the pillars of the Church.
Given that the church is dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki (a warrior saint), great emphasis is placed on depictions of military saints in armor and historical fathers of the Serbian Church, such as Saint Sava.
The details of the paintings are noted for their extraordinary richness of color and prominent use of gold.
