Once known as Casa Poporului (House of the People), the Palace is the current seat of the Romanian Parliament and houses the Chamber and Senate.

The dimensions of the building are really impressive: 12 floors, 270 meters long, 245 meters wide and over 3,100 rooms. The Palace is a total of 63 meters high, of which only 48 are visible.

Palace boasts, in fact, four underground levels and an anti-atomic bunker.

Parliament Building was built in the “golden age” of the Romanian dictatorial regime, in 1984.

About 700 architects participated in the construction project together with 20,000 workers.

The Palace of Parliament was built at the behest of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu who wanted at all costs to own the largest palace in the world.

The entire economy of the state, moreover, was entirely oriented towards the realization of the project. Public state funds (over 3 billion dollars) were used, which caused the entire country to fall into misery.

The dwelling aesthetically is an incredible set of styles: from Liberty to the Romanian rural style passing through the kitch of the sixties.

There are numerous rooms but the main ones are:

• The office where Ceauşescu met with his advisers and in 1968 decided not to consent to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

• The dining room with the rich table laid out as then.

• The famous bathrooms from the gold taps with the gold tiles in the mosaics of the couple’s bathroom.

• The wardrobes of Elena Ceauşescu, “Lenutza” as she was called in the house, which contain more than five thousand clothes, furs and shoes.

• The winter garden with spa and Olympic-size swimming pool.

Today the residence is a museum, but the sumptuous villa was stormed in 1989 by anti-communist revolutionaries who, upon entering, were shocked to discover the rich interiors at a time when most of the people lived in conditions of extreme austerity.

Muzuel National al Satului is the largest open-air museum in Europe and focuses on rural constructions typical of Romania.

Its peculiarity and popularity are due to the presence of about 300 different types of wooden houses and churches that were brought here in 1936 from all over the country to illustrate the history and traditions of peasant villages.

These are therefore original buildings, taken in their natural environment and inserted in a space that wants to recreate some moments of life of the Romanian countryside.

The Patriarchal Cathedral was built in 1650 on top of Dealul Mitropoliei Hill.

The Patriarchal Cathedral belongs to an important monastic complex where there is also a bell tower, the Patriarchal Palace and the Patriarchal Residence.

Once at the entrance door of the Cathedral, looking upwards, you can admire the splendid icon of St. Constantine and St. Helena dating back to 1665.

The interior of the Cathedral is made unique and evocative by the Byzantine frescoes.

The Cathedral also houses the relics of San Dimitrie and boasts an important collection of religious art.

In 1862 the Cathedral was the scene of a particularly relevant and shocking event: the assassination of the first Romanian Prime Minister Barbu Catargiu. The prime minister was killed right in front of the Cathedral with two gunshots, while passing by in a carriage.

Stavropoleos’ name is a Romanian interpretation of a Greek word, Stauropolis, meaning “the city of the Cross”.

The church and its monastery were erected in 1724.

The church has miraculously escaped the destruction of the Ceaușescu era.

Today, beyond the church you can see a pretty cloister and a building from the early 1900s that houses a library.
