Temppeliaukio Church – Helsinki

Temppeliaukio Church (Temppeliaukion kirkko in Finnish) is one of Helsinki’s landmarks.

Located in the heart of the Töölö district, this Lutheran church is a fascinating blend of natural rock and modern design.

The idea of building a church in the rocky Temppeliaukio area dates back to the early 20th century.

The site was designated for a church as early as 1906, but construction began much later. Construction began in February 1968 and was completed in September 1969.

The church is built directly into the rock, giving it a unique, natural aesthetic.

The interior walls are left as natural rock, offering a raw, organic feel that contrasts with the modern design elements.

The ceiling is a copper-clad dome, while the skylight surrounding the dome allows natural light to enter the building.

The church’s acoustics are exceptional, thanks in part to the unworked rock surfaces, making it a suitable space for classical music concerts.
