Military Memorial of Redipuglia – Gorizia

Military Memorial of Redipuglia – Gorizia

Redipuglia Memorial is located in the province of Gorizia and is the largest Italian memorial dedicated to the fallen of the Great War.

Built on the slopes of Mount Sei Busi, it was inaugurated on 18th September 1938 after ten years of work.

At the entrance to the memorial it is possible to visit the armored trench that was built and garrisoned by the infantrymen of the Siena, Savona and Cagliari Brigades during the actions of June-July 1915 in the battles of the Isonzo.

In the large square there is the “Via Eroica” with 38 bronze tombstones, on which the locations of the battles that took place on the Karst have been written in relief.

In the center of it stands the large tomb of Emanuele Filiberto Duke of Aosta, Commander of the III Army, whose body was placed in the crypt closed by a metal gate.

Next to it are the granite tombs of five generals: Antonio Chinotto, Tommaso Monti, Giovanni Prelli, Giuseppe Paolini and Fulvio Riccieri.

Behind it rise the 22 steps (2.5 meters high and 12 meters wide) which, in alphabetical order, hold the remains of the 39,857 identified soldiers. Each niche is surmounted by the inscription “Presente”.

At the end of the staircase and steps, two large tombs covered with bronze plates hold the remains of over 60,000 unknown soldiers. Here there is also the Chapel in memory of all the fallen.

At the top, three crosses recall the image of Mount Golgotha and the crucifixion of Christ.

In the back of the memorial two museum rooms have been set up and inside there are photographs of the first Memorial of Redipuglia, documents and various war artifacts.
