Georgian National Museum – Tbilisi

The Georgian National Museum is located in Tbilisi and is the largest museum complex in Georgia. 

Located in the historical part of Tbilisi, the museum houses a large collection of Georgian cultural and historical artifacts dating back to ancient times.

The National Museum of Georgia was founded in 2004 and is located in a neoclassical building dating back to the nineteenth century.

The museum houses a wide range of collections, and the most notable sections include:

  • Ancient art and culture
  • Medieval art
  • Modern art 
  • Contemporary art
  • Treasure Gallery

 Among the most significant finds of ancient art are the golden mask of King Colchicus, a bronze statue of a knight from the fourth century BC and the Georgian manuscript from the twelfth century in panther skin.

In the medieval art section are the frescoes removed from the walls of the Church of Athens, an important Georgian monastic complex. The frescoes depict biblical scenes and portraits of saints, testifying to the artistry of Georgian medieval masters.

Another very important section is the Treasure Gallery inside which there is a collection of jewels, silverware, icons and other precious objects that testify to the craftsmanship and richness of Georgian culture.

One of the most important finds is the Cross of Bagrat III, which dates back to the tenth century and is decorated with gems.
