The Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, also known as the Georgievsk Treaty Monument, is located about 120 km from Tbilisi, along the Georgian Military Road near the village of Gudauri in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region.
Built in 1983 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Georgievsk signed in 1783 between the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Georgia.
This structure is a large circular stone and concrete building that overlooks the Devil’s Valley in the Caucasian Mountain range.
It features seven concrete columns and a large tile mural that spans the entire inner circumference, depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history.
The mural decorated by painter Zurab Cereteli shows a fusion of cultural and historical narratives, highlighting significant events and figures from both countries.
Starting from the large female figure in the center of the mural, the Georgian narrative takes place on the left side while the Russian-Soviet narrative takes place on the right side.
The Monument serves as a historical link, reflecting a complex past and cultural ties between Georgia and Russia. Although relations between the two countries have faced challenges, the monument still remains a point of historical and cultural interest.
