Holy Trinity Cathedral – Tbilisi

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Tbilisi, is one of the most iconic monuments in the city.

It is located in the historic district of Avlabari and dominates the city skyline with its distinctive golden dome that reaches 101 meters in height.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1995 and was completed in 2004, making it the newest cathedral in Georgia.

It was built to commemorate 1,500 years of autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church and to serve as the main national place of worship. It can accommodate up to 15,000 people at once, making it one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world.

Architecturally, it adheres to the classical style of traditional Georgian Orthodox design. The cathedral is the third tallest Eastern Orthodox church in the world. Its height exceeds 100 meters, the dome is crowned by a cross that alone reaches almost 8 meters in height.

In the early stages of construction, sacred land from Jerusalem and stones from the Jordan River were solemnly embedded in the foundations.

Inside the cathedral there are numerous religious relics of inestimable value. Among the most revered is a cross that once stood on top of the ancient Georgian capital of Mtskheta, on the site of the current Jvari Monastery (dedicated article).
