Collegiate Church of San Martino – Colmar

Collegiate Church of San Martino – Colmar

The Collegiate Church of San Martino is located in the historic center of Colmar and with its spire and intricate stained-glass windows, it is a symbol of the city’s history and cultural heritage.

Construction began in the 13th century and was completed in the 14th century, but despite the long period of construction, the church was never completely finished and the originally planned north tower was never built.

Built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, its Gothic architecture reflects the influence of the great cathedrals of northern France.

A devastating fire in 1572 destroyed the wooden structure of the south tower. During the French Revolution, the church was desecrated and its treasures were looted.

In the outer perimeter of the church there are numerous portals, some of which have been walled up over time.

In the central portal there is a richly decorated tympanum depicting the Adoration of the Magi and the Last Judgment.

The interior has a nave characterized by five elongated bays separated by cylindrical pillars and there are numerous medieval sculptures and stained-glass windows.

The stained-glass windows depict biblical scenes and religious figures.
