Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is located near the town of Gorje, about 4 km from Lake Bled.

At 1.6 km long, it winds its way between the mighty vertical walls of the Hom and Boršt Mountains and is crossed by the Radovna River.

Coming from Bled, the Vintgar Gorge is the entry point to Triglav National Park.

The Vintgar Gorge was discovered in 1891 by the mayor of Gorje Jakob Žumer and the cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer.

In its original form it was inaccessible but, thanks to the tourist development of the area, more than 500 meters of bridges and tunnels were built in 1893.

Due to its natural beauty, Vintgar has entered the main tourist attractions of Slovenia and the number of its visitors is increasing every year.

In the Vintgar Gorge there are two other interesting man-made infrastructures. The dam, which conveys water to the small hydroelectric power plant and the one-arched stone bridge of the Transalpine railway, built in 1906.

The Vintgar Gorge is traveled through a path where in some places you pass on a comfortable wooden walkway that winds right along the banks of the river.

Be careful because it is not possible to go back the same way as the outward journey.

At the end of the Vintgar Gorge route, you can go back by following two different paths.

Vintgar – Santa Caterina Route

Going to the right, you choose the longer route, which first crosses a lush forest, and then flows into a large pasture that offers beautiful views of nearby Bled.

This route is almost 6 kilometers long and will take about two and a half hours to complete.

Route from Sum – Blejska Dobrava

The second option is shorter but less scenic. From the Sum waterfall you will have to go to the left, following the gravel path. Follow the signs and you’ll head straight back to the gorge entrance, where they sell entrance tickets.
