Panathenaic Stadium – Athens

The Panathenaic Stadium was built in 330 BC. to host the Great Panathenae, competitive competitions in honor of the patron deity of the city Athena.

Built in a small natural basin between the hills of Agra and Ardettos, the current structure has the shape of a horseshoe with a track 204 meters long and 33 meters wide.

Throughout its history the Stadium has undergone many changes, some of them radical, so much so that after centuries of complete neglect it was completely restored in 1895 to host the first Olympic Games of the modern era.

The stadium was restored a second time for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games when it hosted archery competitions.

Inside the Panathenaic Stadium is the Olympic Museum with numerous historical artifacts such as the original posters and Olympic torches of all the modern Olympics.
